Why many expats never start investing in stocks and ETFs in Denmark
Confusing Tax Rules
Danish tax on stocks and ETFs works differently from most countries. Foreign ETFs are taxed every year on their gains, even if you do not sell (lagerbeskatning).
Too Many Broker Options
Nordnet, Saxo, your own bank or a newer app? Accounts and fees are hard to compare when everything is in Danish.
Fear of Making Mistakes
An ETF that is not on Skat's Positive List is often taxed at a higher rate. Many people postpone investing because they worry about getting it wrong.
The reality is that investing in Denmark is not as complicated as it first appears. Once you understand how stocks, ETFs and Danish taxes fit together, getting started becomes much easier.

Meet Emil Verdoes
My name is Emil Verdoes, and I have been investing for more than 12 years across stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrency, and real estate.
Throughout that journey, I have experienced both bull markets and market downturns, giving me a practical understanding of how investing works in the real world, not just in theory.
Over the years, I have helped friends, colleagues, and international professionals better understand the Danish investment landscape, including how to get started, common pitfalls to avoid, and how to build a long-term investment strategy.
I founded KapitalAkademiet with a simple mission: to provide clear, unbiased investment education without hidden agendas, product sales, or unnecessary complexity.
My focus is not on predicting the next winning stock. Instead, I help people understand the fundamentals of investing, so they can make informed decisions and build confidence in their financial future.

Frequently asked questions
Expats and international residents in Denmark who want to start investing in stocks, ETFs or index funds, whether you are new to investing or have invested in another country.
No. The course is designed for beginners and explains every Danish term in plain English.
Gains and dividends are taxed as share income (aktieindkomst): 27% up to 79,400 DKK in 2026 and 42% above that (158,800 DKK for married couples). Foreign ETFs are taxed every year on their gains, even if you do not sell (lagerbeskatning). If an ETF is not on Skat's Positive List, the return is taxed as capital income instead, which is often more expensive. The course explains how this works in practice.
The aktiesparekonto is a Danish share savings account. Returns are taxed at a flat 17% every year. The deposit ceiling is 174,200 DKK in 2026, and the room for new deposits is the ceiling minus the account's value on 31 December the year before. It can hold listed stocks and share-based funds, including ETFs on Skat's Positive List. The course covers when it makes sense and how the deposit limit is calculated.
We do not recommend a specific broker, and we have no affiliate deals. The course shows how to compare Nordnet, Saxo, your own bank and newer apps on fees, account types and tax reporting, so you can choose for yourself.
Yes. It is an instructor-led live online course in English, not a prerecorded course. It lasts about two hours, with time for your questions.
